History of Murudeshwara Temple

According to Hindu mythology, the Murudeshwara Temple is linked to the legend of Ravana and the Atma Linga. Lord Shiva gifted the Atma Linga to Ravana, but fearing its misuse, Lord Ganesha tricked him into placing it on the ground. The place where Ravana tried to remove it became the Mahabaleshwar Temple in Gokarna, and Murudeshwara houses the cloth covering the Atma Linga.
